Aging In Your Own Home Where You Belong

Let’s face it, the majority of todays senior population would much rather age in their own home. The main reason is independence and staying in your own home is the easiest way to maintain your independence.

One of the biggest obstacles to aging in place is coming to terms with the fact that for many to remain at home safely we may need a little extra support. It is not uncommon for tension to arise in families as children begin to express concerns as they see their parents begin to struggle with tasks that once were so easy.

It is only natural for the senior population to push back a little and to be resistant to “help” coming in to lend a hand. After all our senior population were the moms and dads who provided for their families for so long. They were the decision makers, it can be difficult as children begin to act more like parents. It is the struggle with the loss of independence at the heart of most of the initial reluctance to get the help needed to age in place.

" Leaving home is surrendering a piece of one’s independence, and who wants to do that.

As the director of a busy home care agency and a former director of a Continuing Care Retirement Community, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative impact personalized in-home senior care can have on individuals as they age. There is no question that the quality of life of aging in place is unmatched.

There is no place like home.

The Growing Need for Age in Place Services

The Evolving Demographics of Todays Senior Population

The demographics for the senior population is evolving. Baby boomers are now in their 70s with more than 10,000 turning 65 every day. Most of today’s seniors express a strong desire to age in the comfort of their homes, surrounded by the familiar.

However, this journey can present certain challenges that demand thoughtful consideration and tailored solutions.

Age in Place Home Care Services

Cornerstone of Independence

Age In Place home care services serve as a cornerstone in ensuring that seniors can maintain their independence while receiving the support they need. Our comprehensive range of services encompasses personal care, companionship, and household assistance, all designed to meet the unique requirements of the individual. We never take a one size fits all approach. In fact, Age in Place owner Chris Gulley once owned a nationally prominent senior care franchise in Wilmington, NC. Unfortunately, many home care agencies are part of franchise systems. Chris found the franchise model to be way too restrictive and self-serving for the franchisor. As an experienced caregiver who provided care for his own farther Chris dreamed of an agency that put the patient first. Chris founded Age in Place to make that a reality.

Customized Care Plans

One of the key advantages of Age in Place services is the ability to create highly customized care plans. Our experienced caregivers work closely with seniors and their families to understand their specific needs, preferences, and routines. This personalized approach ensures not only physical well-being but also contributes significantly to emotional and mental health. We are your advocates for independence, our mission is to help people age in place as long as possible to preserve their dignity.

Aging in Place Success Stories:

Ms. Joan was a vibrant and kindhearted woman, her daughters reached out to us expressing concerns that Ms. Joan was slowing down. She had fallen multiple times as her Parkinson’s continued to take its toll. On our first meeting Ms. Joan was rather distant. Her daughters were trying to talk her into using our services and I could see her reluctance.

It wasn’t until I shared with Ms. Joan that when we come into her home, we respect the fact that we are only there on her approval. I explained that we would go over every detail of what she wanted us to do and that the team entire team would respect her wishes and deliver only the things that she wanted. I assured her that we worked for her, we answered her and that we were her advocates for her independence.

Ms. Joan gave me a smile and I could see her relaxing. She asked who would be coming to her home to which I replied, “that really depends on who might be the best match for you, tell me some of the things you like to do”.

She explained how she loved to bake, and she proudly told me about how she designed her kitchen for baking. She was so proud as she gave me a tour of her kitchen. She had pull out shelves customized for her mixers.

I explained that I had a caregiver who loved to bake, and that I would be happy to bring her by to introduce her. I told her if you like her, and you think you would like to give it a shot to see if it improves the quality of her life, it would be up to her. No strings attached.

When Ms. Joan met Stephanie for the first time there was an instant connection. They hit it off immediately. Stephanie was with Ms. Joan for years; they became very close, and Stephanie was even with her when she passed. Stephanie was like family to Ms. Joan, and she is still in contact with Ms. Joans daughters to this day.
